SUS Board recognizes September 'Above and Beyond' Award honoree

Southern University Baton Rouge employee Towanda Jefferson was honored with the September 2017 "Above and Beyond" Award during the SU Board of Supervisors regular monthly meeting, September 22, on the Baton Rouge campus.

"Towanda is an exceptional employee in the Comptroller’s Office," said co-worker Stephanie Spears, who nominated Jefferson.

Spears, the SU Comptroller’s Office billing and receiving manager, describes Jefferson as a "bright, strong, and a talented leader of tomorrow, one who can manage tasks, who has a confidents spirit and excellent communications skills."

Currently, an administrative coordinator III in the Bursar's Office, Jefferson has worked at SU for 15 years.

"Ms. Jefferson goes above and beyond constantly without solicitation or hesitation, and does so with charm," said SU Bursar Ben Stove Jr., who introduced Jefferson for the Board’s presentation. "She [Jefferson] is renown throughout the SU System and beyond for excellent customer service and dedication and devotion to our beloved University."

The September "Above and Beyond" honoree is pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting at SU. She joins her youngest daughter, who also is a SU student.

"Towanda is active in the Accounting Department and [is] a willing participant in school functions as well as and experienced employee," added Spears.

"I really love what I do at the University and want to continue to make the University proud,” said Jefferson. "I love helping the students, faculty, and staff and will continue as long as I'm here."

The "Above and Beyond" Award was established to help inspire and motivate SU employees to reach their maximum performance. One award is presented at the SU Board of Supervisors meetings each month.

Recipients of the award are nominated by their peers. The top three nominations are forwarded to the Board of Supervisors chair and vice chair for selection.
